Western PawnBrokers, 2817 Montana Ave., Billings, MT 59101, is celebrating its 36th anniversary. Western Pawnbrokers has grown to be the oldest pawnshop in Montana, pioneering many lending regulations that are mandatory in the industry today. Owners Bert and Andy Nelson have been offering fair loans and fair prices on unique new and used items to generations of customers. Services include bail bonds, consumer loans, check cashing, western union and pawn loans.
In 1975 Bert Nelson opened a little pawnshop on Montana Avenue in Billings Montana after seeking a career change that would get him out of his Missoula office and back to eastern Montana.
The small shop then moved 30 feet to the west and landed in the J.D. Losekamp building and Western PawnBrokers was born. Built in 1903, this 18,000 square foot, 2 level building has a 16 room hotel on the upper level that housed cowboys and travelers and is still operating today.
The Losekamp building has housed many businesses in between but today the bottom level is split between Western PawnBrokers and Farwest Gallery, which was added to the store in the 1990’s. The store has a large selection of specialty items like tools, musical instruments, guns, electronics and a gallery of Montana Native American art and western collectibles including an incredible array of beadwork and jewelry.
